December 17, 1952 - October 6, 2023
With sadness, we report the passing of Robert Canter '70.
Bob was born on December 17, 1952, in Manhattan, NY, the son of Gilbert Canter and Madeline Milgrom. He graduated from Friends Seminary in New York and went on to receive his bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, D.C. It was at American University where Bob met his best friend and wife, Lee Canter. The two married in 1975 and were together for 50 years.
Bob and Lee lived in NJ and MD, first putting roots down in Glen Ridge, NJ. There they made incredible life-long friends and welcomed their two children, Rebecca and Matthew Canter. They then moved to North Potomac, MD. The move provided an opportunity to be close to family, including Lee's brother Mark Weinberger and Bob's brother Jimmy Shalleck.
Bob's happiest moments were spent with his family and his proudest moments were watching his children grow and succeed. Bob regularly travelled to Gettysburg lacrosse games – when he wasn't questioning the referee's calls, he was cheering on Matt in his feats on the field. He also loved discussing random science with his daughter – and was thrilled to attend her PhD dissertation defense at MIT.
Bob will be missed by his wife, Lee Canter, two children Rebecca (Andrea Tacchetti) Canter and Matthew (Jordan) Canter, two grandchildren Eleanor Tacchetti and Jack Canter, his brother Jim (Sheila) Shalleck, and his favorite furry felines Jackson and Izzy. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Canter and mother, Madeline Milgrom. Bob has over a dozen nieces and nephews with whom he was incredibly close.
