Class of 1957

As reported By John Schwartz ’57

Elizabeth "Betsy" (Gummey) Pemberton ’57 - died on March 7, 2024. Despite her distance from the rest of us in Australia, Betsy remained connected while becoming an authoritative figure in classical archaeology. At Friends, Betsy was chief editor of our 1957 Yearbook, she was active in Dr. Hunter’s Philosophy Club and in choral singing, and was on the girls’ varsity basketball team. After Friends, she got her AB degree from Mount Holyoke College and her MA and PhD from Columbia. She also pursued graduate work at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, where she was introduced to the archaeological excavations at ancient Corinth, to which she devoted much of her career. That her scholarship was matched by her physical strength and agility was demonstrated there by her skillful escape from a museum locked for the night by climbing to the roof and down to an interior courtyard.

Betsy was on the faculty of the University of Maryland for fourteen years, but spent a sabbatical at the same American School she had attended in Athens and met Australian archeologist Ian McPhee, whom she married in 1981 and moved to Australia, although she continued to use her earlier married name professionally. She taught at the University of Melbourne, first in Fine Arts and then in Classics. Her many books and scholarly papers concentrated on ancient Corinth, where she and Ian worked almost every year, prompting her frequently to invite Friends classmates to visit. Betsy retired from teaching in 2002, but continued her research at the Trendall Centre for Ancient Mediterranean Studies at La Trobe University, a substantial institution near Melbourne, and continued to write highly regarded works with Ian, including an important volume in 2012 on Corinthian pottery. Meanwhile, she obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Trinity College, Melbourne, in 2010 and wrote a short article for the Australian Biblical Review. Betsy stayed as close to her Friends classmates as she could from Australia. She attended our 50th Reunion and, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit both our countries, engaged in lively email correspondence about disease control measures with the rest of us. Betsy is survived by her husband, Ian. Her sister, Mary Gummey Morson, Friends 1953, predeceased her in 1985.

Class of 1958

We are sad to report that Margot Winger Larrabee '58 passed away on September 27, 2024. We are holding the family in the Light.

Class of 1961

As reported by Catherine Munnell Smith '60

Jane Dara Edelstein Rosenbloom '60 shares, “Arthur and I still spend our winters in Scottsdale, Arizona at a gated community called Desert Mountain. We have a wonderful time there with friends playing golf, tennis, pickleball and bridge. Summer is divided between New York City and the Elberon Bathing Club in New Jersey. Our daughter Maggie lives in Washington, D.C. and is a social worker at Howard University Hospital. Our son Jeffrey is a residential real estate broker in Scottsdale. He is married to Ganine, and they have 5-year-old twins Olivia and Wesley. Our lives are ever so much sweeter with grandchildren. I hope to show up in the spring for Reunion.”

Class of 1962

Randall K. Nichols '62 shares, “Since being promoted to Senior Professor last year, I was asked to develop a new Master of Science in Astronautics. It is scheduled for deployment in 2025. Apparently, I am not doing enough work so management has asked me to be its first director. I am happy to report that Book 9 entitled Advanced Technologies for Humanity in our UAS/CUAS/UUV/Space textbook series was published on July 29, 2024. It is quite a theme change from other books in my team’s inventory. I think it syncs well with Friends' values in that we are trying to find technologies to feed the global population and improve lives.

Class of 1964

Back row: John Foss ’64, Al Gilley ’64, Jono Nareff ’64.

Front row: Jonathan Cerf ’64, Barbara Carey ’64, Alan Goldberg ’64, and Jill Ross Stewart ’64

Barbara Carey '64 shares, “Eleven members of the Class of 1964, which had just 25 people in its graduating class, showed up either in person (Al Gilley, Jono Nareff, John Foss, Jonathan Cerf, Alan Goldberg, Jill Ross Stewart, and me) or via Zoom (Valentine Hertz Kass in D.C., Bob Rostand in Italy, Louise Walsh in Paris, and Tina Hehmeyer Rosso in Chicago) for our 60th Reunion. The night before the reunion, Al, Jono, and I got together for dinner at Stella, a delightful bistro located (bizarrely) in Macy’s. Even after all these years, the conversation flowed easily. Then the next day, the School gave us a conference room for our Zoom session. We had a great time! Al shared with us an amazing video that he had played at his promotion to Brigadier General, capturing the 30 years of his life up to that promotion.”

Class of 1975

As reported by Fran Bruno ’75 and Adam Owett ’75

“Hi everyone! Fran and Adam here asking for your help in planning our 50th reunion which will be held May 16-18, 2025. Several classmates have volunteered to help with the planning, but we’d love to have a few more New York City folks to be boots on the ground for us far away people. We will have a Zoom call some time in the fall to start planning. Usually on the Saturday night of reunion weekend our class gets together for a Class of 1975 only party. In the past, we’ve had this gathering at classmates' homes, and if someone in New York City has the space and would be willing to host, that would be fabulous! If not, we’d like a nice quiet place where we can catch up on each others’ lives. If you are interested in helping and/or hosting please email us at adamtowett@gmail.com or franbruno1017@gmail.com.

Delice (Donchian) Bolotin ’75 writes "I spend my time working at a Horse Rescue nearby and absolutely love it. The horses come from all different types of situations and some of the stories break your heart. But the staff does a great job of rehabilitating them and finding good caring homes. I love my time there and helping the horses to trust and heal. I also play a lot of tennis and paddle. Retirement is great!”

And William “Bill” Laufer '75 sent us this photo of his beautiful granddaughter Shaili Laufer

Frankel!

Adam Owett ’75: “My news is that my daughter, Lola Owett ’21, graduates from Tufts the same weekend of our 50th, but I’ll try to split the time and at least attend Friday’s festivities.”

Fran Bruno ’75’s big news is that she and her husband have sold their house in Florida and are full-time New York State residents in Saratoga Springs. We can’t wait to see you all in May 2025.
